in such a world art | veg | academia | geekery

My name is Valerie. I am currently a grad student in Communication Studies (interested in art institutions and the internet) who thrives in a realm of yummy smells, instant and speedy wifi, and the artists, designers and thinkers who make everything worthwhile. Welcome to my website.

Engaged!

This Canada day was extra special for me, since my partner of over seven years proposed - under a dark sky ablaze with fireworks.  What a lovely surprise!  It all feels exhilarating and just right.  Anyway, just thought I would share the special news.  Now we just have to find a way to have a [...]

My first post at Apt613

Trying my hand at more freelance blogging by becoming a contributor at Vegdaily and now the local Ottawa event blog Apartment 613 that writes about great, less-well-known events in this often underestimated Canadian capital.
My first post is about the new weekly Practical Pastry classes by Morsel Foods.  Weekly dessert classes that are vegan, fair-trade and [...]

Taking a break

You may have noticed my absence lately - well, school has gotten the better of me and I am isolating myself to get through this term successfully.  I will be finished on April 17th and have a folder of things to blog about and new photos taken with my finally fixed Nikon camera!  So please [...]

On finding it increasingly difficult to post

I want to apologize for not posting as I promised.  Kind of wishing I had brought my macbook with me, since uploading pictures to Flickr takes hours of my time that I should be spending travelling.  I am thinking about waiting until I get to France to do some major updating (for about May 1st), [...]

tweaking … again

As you might be able to tell I am fiddling yet again with design, trying to find something I feel good about. Loving this template but trying to customize it to my liking and periodically breaking it! Ah, the joys of blind CSS coding. Stay tuned for a polished site (hopefully!) and [...]

Updates from a Chilly City

We are snowed in here, after a huge blizzard yesterday. So much has happened, where to start? I’ve been trying to “get out more” and get away from the laptop, which can be so addictive. Also trying to reconnect with friends I don’t see too often, which involves a lot of Facebook-yammering. [...]

Gah! Redesign woes

Okay, as you can tell I’m having issues with fiddling with my blog’s design. Abandoning the idea of switching to a different template completely, at this point I am just experimenting with different colours. This would be easy if things were just all one colour but the template incorporates .gif images that I [...]

Potential blog redesign?

I’ve spent the past few days looking at possible Wordpress templates for a much needed redesign.  While my current design is certainly fine, my site (in case you haven’t noticed) has been very slow and heavy lately.  So I have already contacted Dreamhost in case it’s on their end, but am also going to experiment [...]

La Familia

Greetings from the family gathering intensive experience - currently on hiatus from the internet!  Unwilling, of course.  Doing lots of baking and cooking of delicious foods to be arrayed alongside the “normal” omni-fare.  Will be taking a blogging break (I think) to return with many food photos and much brilliance.

Linky Linky love: Resource for Vegan Travel

So a few posts of note have been spontaneously written par moi over at the t-log. One about Cute Overload beluga and turkey gazing, and the other about a possible interest in studying animals in advertising after seeing some intriguing commercial uses of animals.
Anyway, I thought I’d stop in to share a great site [...]
