in such a world art | veg | academia | geekery

My name is Valerie. I am currently a grad student in Communication Studies (interested in art institutions and the internet) who thrives in a realm of yummy smells, instant and speedy wifi, and the artists, designers and thinkers who make everything worthwhile. Welcome to my website.

What music do you listen to when you exercise?

For Christmas I was lucky enough to get the Nike+ sensor for my shoe.  This ‘talks’ wirelessly to my iPod Nano and allows me to set up workouts according to speed, time, calories etc.  The GPS tracks my distance and speed (via pace), and a female voice lets me know when I have run .5 [...]

Settling in

Posts have been scarce lately what with my camera lens being broken, settling into my new apartment, and beginning graduate school after having taken a year off.  I can feel my brain getting into gear again (all of that dust being blown off from the areas that weren’t being used for travelling and working) and [...]

Planar Fasciitis? Keeping me on the Ground

I just read today that sitting down - just the mere act of sitting on your bum - causes the enzymes that burn fat to actually shut down. Breaking research that the way our society keeps us sitting down is contributing to the obesity crisis. So not only are we not exercising, but [...]

Menu Prep and Taking a Break to ‘Clear my Cache’

I have the day off today - it’s a nice break to give me a bit of a breather. Speaking of breathing, or in my case, really learning how to breathe - I got up early and trekked over to yoga - turns out it much harder to do with thick snow on the [...]

On Lemon Loving and a Peaceful Day

Lately I am obsessed with lemons. I go through these serial infatuations with different fruits - recently, it was apples. Before that, cold oranges - you know, straight from the fridge. Anyway, I just never realized how much I really enjoy lemons and just how essential they are. [...]

What is a healthy vegan lifestyle to me? In order of importance:

Incorporating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables - especially greens!
Minimizing stress as much as possible
Having an active lifestyle (while also incorporating yoga/meditation)
Avoiding too much wheat (thus largely gluten free) and eating good grains like quinoa, brown rice, millet, etc.
Cutting out high bad fat [...]

Power Yoga in a Hot room: What have I gotten myself into?

Wow - I got up at 5am this morning and hiked over to my power yoga class.  Power yoga.  In a hot room. Yes, I actually survived it.  Surprisingly enough, I was able to keep up with everyone.  It was really difficult though, which is where the breathing came in handy.  I focussed [...]

Random Sunday Chatter

Looks like I’m going to see the Bee Movie tomorrow night. After this great teaser, how could I not? Also, Eddie Izzard was in it, who is utterly awesome. I think I will be content to follow him around in whatever movie he happens to be starring in, especially his own stand [...]

Rock Climbing part II

(I’m a bit rusty on this blogging thing. I keep starting entries and then censoring myself too much and saving them as drafts in desperation. I have decided to let loose and try to post freely, in the honest acknowledgment that these pieces are meant to be unfinished in nature, my own thoughts)
The [...]
