Please note: This blog has gone portable as I abandon the still thawing Canada for a whirlwind four month journey around Europe.

I plan to post at least once a week to document my adventures as a solo female vegan art-loving traveller. Check out the map for geographical details of the trip in progress. Both the blog and the photos on Flickr will be updated as often as possible.

Impromptu Veg Brunch Activity: Naming a Scrumptious Recipe

Veg Brunch

Last Saturday I attended a lovely vegan brunch in the apartment of my friend Katy. Above you can see the tasty spread including vegan turtles (chocolate covered dates with roasted almonds inside), roasted potatoes, and mini-spelt chocolate chip muffins. (more pictures can be seen on my Flickr account by clicking any of these images)

Captain Katy's Lentil Kapow!

But the star of the show was revealed part-way through the potluck when Katy unveiled a mystery recipe: consisting of roasted leeks, onion, broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, brown lentils, & etc. This may sound simple but the tastes in the dish were complex - salty, garlicky and total yum all around. Spontaneously she announced that everyone had the task of coming up with a name (or two) for the recipe. On little slips of paper we brainstormed clever titles to somehow sell this recipe.

taped names

When the slips were all compiled in a black mug, Katy taped them up to the wall and she read them out as we voted via democracy for our favourites. Here is a list of the ones I could remember/make out from my photographs:

  • Captain Katy’s Stove-Heated Lentastic Leeks Broccoli Mix of Wonders
  • Millennium Surprise
  • Leeky Lentils
  • Lentils do it better
  • No Bananas Added
  • Lentils Make Morning Love
  • Lentil Kapow!
  • Get your Broccoli-MMMs
  • Awesome bountiful mash
  • Veggies Wake Up @ Noon
  • Wish You Were Here Stew
  • The Jungle Harvest Daal
  • Prime Lentil Concoction

The winner?

  1. Combination of two names: Captain Katy’s Lentil Kapow!
  2. Lentils Make Morning Love (runner up)
  3. No Bananas Added (honourable mention)

Since she never wrote the recipe down I still don’t know exactly how she made this magic - but I remember some rough details from her description - first roasting the lentils, broccoli, onion, mushrooms, and sun-dried tomato slices with a can of brown lentils, olive oil, and spices (garlic powder, thyme, etc) in the oven. Then all fried together in a wok with soy sauce. Anyway, I will surely make the effort to re-create this dish but not sure if I will come close! Had such a wonderful time with lots of laughs either way.
