Stumbleupon Surfing Spree and New Blogs of Interest

[Wow, two entries in one day during Nablopomo! Since it's past midnight, does this entry count for Saturday?] So I’ve been doing a little of the true ‘web surfing’ lately, which can be really fun once in a while when I’m in that mood for discovering new things and enjoying the sensations of surprise and interaction that can come from well designed sites. I thought I would share some of the finds that I feel are worth a visit.

- Collective Perception: While it has many interesting quotations and perspective represented, I would say this site is fantastic mostly because of the amazing artworks and photographs featured within a gorgeous layout. My impression is that the overall content is related to the idea of the future, theories about the universe, and the visual shape of the fractal traced through images as connected to many aspects of the natural world. Through this site I found the work of a few brilliant artists, especially the photographer Giles Revell who takes captivating images of a leaves in a series he seems to entitle - Line: Leaf Litter.

- Hilarious article: “Note to self: Don’t Skip out on work and Facebook about it Later,” story about a bank employee who made a tactical error that cost him his dignity.

- “9 Words that Don’t Mean What you Think” - very interesting article about words that are commonly misused. For instance, I was surprised by the true definitions of words I’ve been using such as “plethora,” “non-plussed,” and “peruse.” Eep! Evidently I have been completely abusing the word “plethora,” and I think I may have worked it into a few professional documents. I found this site via Stumble, and was not too happy with the high amount of photos of bikini clad women and “dick-ratings.” It somewhat cheapens the experience. But certainly worth a read for the sheer interest factor of the content. I’m wondering though - if everyone is using the words in a different way than the true definition, isn’t the true definition kind of moot? We are always adding new words to the dictionary - if people invent their own interpretations of definitions, shouldn’t those be added to the database? Inevitably you will have to use them in a way that people understand, so you are in that sense always ignoring the original definition in favour of a new one. Language can be so fascinating.

- Also, two new blogs that seem very promising: Cabinet of Wonders, and BLDGBLOG. I look forward to reading more.
