Delicious Veg Meal: Breakfast for Dinner!

I’ve just come back from a delicious vegan dinner hosted and cooked by a local vegan named Sara. She is holding regular dinners to give local vegans the chance to connect with each other, but also to showcase her delicious cooking skills in hopes of someday having her own restaurant. The food certainly lived up to expectations! The best part for me though was the chance to meet new people in the city - we had some great conversations and I’m excited to get to know them better in the future. Sara set up a Facebook group for the event (and there is apparently going to be one again in two weeks, which I’m really excited about) and put up her menu for the evening which gave us a surprising amount of choice. She even hired a waitress to serve the food. Here’s the menu:

Overall theme: Breakfast for Dinner!

Appetizer:
“pigs”-in-a-blanket
-or-
fruit salad with raisins

Main course:
pancakes with any combination of blueberries, chocolate chips, bananas, or strawberries.
-or-
french toast with homemade bread with “egg” on top
-or-
savory green goddess hot cereal
-or-
breakfast buritto in a homemade tortilla

Sides (choose two):
tofu scramble
-or-
hashbrown
-or-
steamed vegetables

Dessert:
Apple pie (a la mode)
-or-
Brownie (a la mode)

The lighting wasn’t great for photographs, but of course I had to take s ome shots for you. People always look at me funny when I insist on taking photographs of the meals - but I don’t mind; I love food photography. Especially after having made a recipe you put a lot of effort into, it’s nice to get a memory of the meal - it creates a virtual memory of recipes you can refer back to if needed. Also, usually vegan food is full of beautiful colours and creative combinations, so it’s nice to get that on film.

Appetizer:

“Pigs” in a blanket - homemade croissants, vegan sausage, Vegan Gourmet cheddar cheese. Wow, I had never tried the Vegan Gourmet cheese, it kind of scared me a little - it tasted so much at least like my memory of cheddar. While I was nervous to eat the sausage since I never really liked meat sausages when I wasn’t vegan, but overall this appetizer was delicious.

chocolate chip pancake with strawberries, scrambled tofu, and steamed veggies

This was my choice for the main meal - pancakes with chocolate chips and strawberries, scrambled tofu, and the steamed veggies (broccoli and dandelion greens). One of the best pancakes I have ever eaten! Some kind of magical voodoo went into the making of it - every mouthful was fantastic.

Breakfast burrito with homemade tortilla, hashbrown and scrambled tofu

This was what my friend Jill ordered - breakfast burrito with salsa and Tofutti sour creme, scrambled tofu and hash brown.

French toast, tofu scramble, hash brown

The other possible choice: french toast, hashbrown and scrambled tofu.

Chocolate Chip Brownie and Soy Delicious Vegan Ice Cream

Had to get a bigger image for this dessert - chocolate chip brownies and Soy Delicious Vanilla ice cream. This brownie, I kid you not, was served warm - it was moist and delicious, especially with the ice cream.

Overall, a great evening with great company. I hope to attend more of these events, I would love to have more vegan friends and be able to have such delicious dinner parties.
